Re-imagining with agility

Travel seems thing of distant past…!

For the past few months of lock down and literally at home, home-office, work-from-home, endless zoom-calls…

Life felt like groundhog day movie, same scene repeating everyday, except winter, spring and even summer came and went!

While lot of things didn’t make sense, yet in tandem a whole new facet of perceptions, vistas and dimensions of life slowly started crystallizing!

Finally we stepped out last weekend to at Jayangar 4th block to fix a HP Spectre new laptop in their authorized service center. Surprisingly its inbuilt camera has some snag on this. Once done with the formalities thought of exploring a bit more, as this place is where I used to live a decade back, apparently largest planned township in Asia, at least then.

Life as seem to be normal as if this part of the world was insulated from the Covid pandemic, lots of traffic, people, eateries operational and so on. At least it is marked as a green zone thankfully, per BBMP, to support the adventurists and careful souls like me!

We walked along the lane where we used to buy fresh vegetables from a street lady vendor during those days between 2006-10. To our surprise she was still there – except she was running a utensils paraphernalia shop in the same place .. in place of vegetables! We both recognized each other after the pleasantries – just to support her in these tough times we bought a few of the home utility stuff.

As we got back on the car driving back to my home, the conversation with her was reflecting on me and insights drawn from it was percolating…and it made sense to me on why she switched from a vegetable vendor to the new business.

  • She has realized couple of years back the key repeat customers (like us) have started to move other parts of the city…a k a – customer base erosion.
  • Perishables has apparently more risk if it is not sold soon, as there is no scope for her to store as a small time street vendor…a k a – high risk business with no contingency.
  • So she had been ramping down her first business while slowly initiating the 2nd one in parallel for a few months…a k a – diversification of service line, test market validation, lowering risk and sustainable business.

Once this reflection finished, I was amazed by the intuitive intelligence and her business acumen. She may not have an MBA or articulation of the keywords, but boy she is quite informed, capable of re-imagining her business with agility!

If she is ready to take on this Covid in stride….I am sure we could do the same too in our corporate business, setups…to re-imagine with agility!
